About Us
Nathan and Traci King
I started in the irrigation industry in 1999 as a “side job” to help fill the gaps of commission sales. It didn’t take long to see the potential and job satisfaction that was available in this industry. I worked my way up through the ranks while gaining education in retail sales, irrigation design, installation, and repairs. During the changing decades and working in the field, I have also received over 1000 hours of classroom work as well-both teaching and learning. I was grateful for the opportunity to team up with my wife, Traci, to strengthen the team and provide quicker responses and more efficient scheduling. We understand that the summer heat in St. George can be brutal so we work long hours to provide timely sprinkler system repairs in St. George and the surrounding areas. We look forward to creating a long term relationship with you!
10 Commonly Asked Irrigation Questions Answered
Q: Is it normal for my valve box to be full of water?
A: Probably not. There are cases where groundwater or water from a normal irrigation cycle can fill a valve box, however, typically this symptom is indicative of a leak. A main leak is more serious in that even a small trickle will leak 24/7 which can add up to thousands of gallons if not addressed.
Q: How long should I water?
A: This a loaded question. A “one size fits all program” does not exist. There are many factors such as current evapotranspiration rate(ET), microclimate, slope, crop coefficient, distribution uniformity, precipitation rate, root depth, and soil type. All of these determine water requirements, length of run time, how many cycles, and frequency. A baseline program is a good starting point but does not necessarily complete the process. See our interactive scheduling calculator on the “helpful tips” page. All of these factors can be calculated to give you a custom run schedule. A proper schedule will encourage deep roots which translates to less stress in the heat and cold.
Q: When is the best time to water?
A: Short answer: early morning. For best results (when possible), complete the lawn cycles just before sunrise. Night watering is a big no no and should be avoided if possible. Standing water left on your lawn with our warm summer nights is just asking for disease. Drip zones are less critical so typically after the lawn is finished is a good time for the plants.
Q: Why do I have to have a backflow device?
A: By connecting to a potable water source for your sprinkler system, a cross connection has been established. Since the 1978 Holy Cross football team had to cancel their entire season due to illness from drinking from the sprinkler system, a sprinkler cross connection was deemed to be high hazard. A backflow device (if properly installed with the proper device) will prevent contaminants that could contaminate your drinking water from entering.
Q: Are there new products available that can help me save water?
A: Yes! Many products have been around for years but most manufacturers are continually updating and improving products to improve efficiency. Among the products are smart controllers, high efficiency nozzles, pressure reducing heads, rain sensors, soil moisture sensors, flow sensors, fertilizer injectors, and mini weather stations. Many of which qualify for rebates.
Q: What rebates are available for efficiency upgrades?
A: Currently in our area, rebates are available for SWAT controllers, high efficiency nozzles, pressure reducers, and removing lawn zones.
Q: What is a SWAT or smart controller?
A: SWAT stands for Smart Water Application Technologies. These features and functions differ by manufacturer and model. In a nutshell, a smart controller will automatically adjust the run times of each zone based on current weather conditions. Some have more options than others meaning a person has more control over the watering triggers as well as the ability to change the program. I can answer questions regrading this to help you choose the model best suited for you your needs.
Q: Why does my grass die or “brown out” in the same spots every year?
A: This usually caused by poor distribution uniformity from a poor layout of the sprinkler heads. It is not uncommon for areas of your lawn that are watered with varying amounts of heads. The areas with four sprinklers hitting them evenly will always look nice while the areas with only one sprinkler will struggle when the temperatures reach about 90. Sometimes bad soil contributes to the problem but the majority is poor installation. It is a common practice to spray a fungicide on these areas year after year with zero results. Fungus does not appear in a healthy lawn just because “it happens every year”. It also helps to verify that it isn’t an insect problem before you treat for fungus. The majority of these problems I see result when the sprinkler system does not properly cover the lawn. These problems can be remedied.
Q: Can I just connect to my lawn zone and add a drip system?
A: This another loaded question. Can you? Yes. Should you? No! Typically the drip zones and lawn zones will require different run times and frequencies making it impossible to set a proper watering schedule by mixing these types of application.
Q: How much does a new sprinkler system cost?
A: If a company is giving you square foot pricing for an installation, my recommendation is to get multiple bids. Square foot pricing is ok for a ball park figure but is never completely accurate. There are many factors that affect the pricing even for a yard that has the same square footage. We price every installation individually. We will come to your home and consult with you about your desires and give a free estimate for your individual yard.
